How Can I Help?
Volunteer at Oakland International!
At Oakland International, our primary needs are for long term volunteers: volunteers who can commit to at least a semester (ideally, the whole school year) on a consistent basis. Committing to a semester/school year allows volunteers to build relationships with students, staff and program partners, and become a real part of our dynamic community. Here's what we're looking for:
OIHS Volunteer Classroom Assistants
- Overview: A Volunteer Classroom Assistant acts as another adult in the classroom to support the teacher, working with a group of students in the classroom. All classes use English Language Learning techniques and build language capacity. No prior English experience is needed!
- Days/Times: Hours are flexible and can fit your schedule. Daily school hours are M, T, TH, F 8:30 am-3:30 pm, W 8:30-12:55 pm.We ask for a minimum 2 hour/week commitment.
- Requirements: Willingness to work with an English Language Learner population in a classroom setting; minimum commitment of 2 hour/week for an entire semester (preferred full-year).

After-School Tutors - With Refugee & Immigrant Transitions
- Overview: Our long-time partner agency, Refugee & Immigrant Transitions, coordinates volunteers for our dynamic after-school tutoring program that takes place Monday-Thursday at OIHS. Volunteering in the after school program is an opportunity to work with all grade levels and provide support in various subject areas. Students come to after-school tutoring on a drop-in basis.
- Days/Times: Available times: M, T, W, Th 3:15-5:00 pm.
- Commitment: Willingness to work with an English Language Learner population in an after-school setting; minimum commitment of one after school day per week for an entire semester (preferred full year)

Home Based Tutors - With Refugee & Immigrant Transitions
- Overview: OIHS's partner organization, Refugee & Immigrant Transitions, trains, matches & supports volunteers to work one-on-one (or sometimes in pairs) with newly-arrived refugee, asylee & immigrant students in the students' homes. Refugee & Immigrant Transitions works with OIHS to prioritize the most high-need, linguistically & culturally isolated students with a caring adult for academic tutoring, ESL teaching & cultural mentoring.
- Schedule: Schedule is flexible, according to availability of tutor, student & the student's family
- Minimum Commitment: 2-4 hours/week, for a minimum of 9 months
